Alaskan Bears
There are only eight species of bear that exist in the world:
The brown bear, (grizzlies are sub-species of brown bears)
Black bear
Polar bear
Giant panda
Andean bear
Sun bear
Asiatic, black bear, (a.k.a. moon bear)
Sloth bear
The bears at the "Fortress of the Bears" sanctuary in Sitka, Alaska, eat a varied seasonal omnivore diet that mimics the diet of wild Alaskan bears: greens and local plants in the spring - fruits and berries during berry season - live salmon during the salmon run . . . . and in the winter ~ hibernation
Toys and activities that encourage natural bear behaviors like foraging, digging fishing, and playing are provided ~ scatter feeds, puzzle feeders, live salmon during salmon run season, pool toys, and much more are provided at the sanctuary.
Bears are not true hibernators as they are able to wake up during their dormant period, which is actually called "Torpor."
These coastal brown bears "torpor" for 3 to 5 months over the winter - at which time the sanctuary closes to the public to keep things quiet and peaceful for them.
Grizzlies are always brown bears but brown bears are not always grizzlies.
There are many sub-species of brown bear. There are two groups of Alaskan coastal brown bears: ABC Island brown bears and Alaskan Peninsula brown bears.
